I am forty seven and have been a diabetic for about 10 years. Diabetes is a life style ailment and needs us to make permanent changes to our way of life. It requires us to include healthy food and regular exercises in our day. These are difficult to attain as we are mere mortals and the society around us cannot understand our condition. We don't look ill, act ill and everyting looks good. So if you go to a party, the food is unhealthy (for diabetics), people expect you to have a drink and your will power is at its worst and you eat and drink and then wallow in guilt at your bad behaviour.
Well, that seems like an everyday story. At work, you go out to eat with your client/ colleague and end up eating badly. Your work load is high, home front is edgy, requiring you to put more eneergy at all ends, leaving you little time for your Yoga, workout or a long walk.
Is this your story? Well this is because you are among a group of people who do not suffer yor disease and cannot relate to your requirements. Also, you do possess sufficient will power to drag yourself to eat / drink well and look after your exercise needs.
You need group therapy. We nned to get together in our neighbourhoods, in our cities, our country and around the world. That way, you can always find other diabetic help groups wherever you go.
Are you up to it? Are you interested in doing something for yourself and your friends? Lets all work together to help each other.
To start, I am interested in setting a Diabetic Self Help Group in Downtown Toronto.
If you are interested (should be over 21 and must be suffering from Type 1 or 2 diabetes) in helping yourself and others around you, please write to diabeticsunited@gmail.com
Over the next few days, Ii wil try to crete a website and take ths idea forward.
